What’s Going On?
Last weekend, I froze. Saturday morning I flew up to Ohio to work on a project I’m doing for my dad and his girlfriend. It also happened to be the opening weekend of my dad’s new dinner theater, so I got to watch him act on stage with a scary fake tan that made his head look like it was carved from wax. It was a good show, though.
This weekend, I’m hosting two friends from the Keys. They’re attending a seminar in Fort Lauderdale and crashing at my pad. It’s a good mix because I get to hang out and visit without giving up every free second of my weekend.
Next weekend, I am spending in Puerto Rico. Matt is there for two weeks on business (co-dependent sad face) and my indulgent jaunt bisects his time away. I even managed to book a flight that won’t cause me to miss any work. I’m that much closer to being a total freakin jet-setter.
I started a pottery class last night. It goes for eight weeks. I signed up because I want to try the wheel. Wait, rephrase. It was clear that everyone in the entire room signed up because we want to try the wheel. We can play with gobs of clay any ol’ time, right? I mean, everyone looked smart enough to have passed fourth grade art.
Well, no wheel last night. We learned to make pinch pots, and some techniques using slab. I’m actually really pleased with both of my projects but seriously, folks. I want to try the damn wheel.
No one outright said anything but I am certain that’s the expression most of us were wearing because when the instructor told us next week we’d be working with coils (groan) she paused, looked around, and said, “Look. That wheel isn’t going to be nirvana for everyone. You have eight weeks here so you better have something to fall back on.”
Fine. I still want to try the wheel. I think I will speak up next week.
Vintage Jamie:
Ha, I still remember that place. It was originally the only place in the Keys for miles open 24/7. When they changed it, I had heard the owner was a big fan of mine and almost appealed to him personally but couldn’t bring myself to actually take advantage.
And, more budding feminism. I was so cute and angry. I probably wouldn’t phrase it like that now, but I still agree with the ideas behind what I vented there.

I’m glad you’re going to get the go to Puerto Rico.
BTW, are you planning on having some sort of Ghost-esqe experience with this pottery class?

See, that’s what I REALLY thought it would be. Imagine my face when I showed up, looked around, and neither Patrick Swayze nor Whoopi Goldberg were in the house.

I am so happy Puerto Rico worked out! 119 days until I am in Jamaica. No mention of H&M or that fab shirt, huh?

Hey, about that wheel… I hope you have tons of fun with it when you finally get to play with it. Because I gotta tell you – I like to think I’m pretty good with my hands and somewhat artistic, and I SUCK at the wheel. Just could not get it. Even got private “lessons” from the art teacher at the middle school I worked at many years ago. I totally suck.
I’m a wheel flunky.
