No, Really. Give Me A Break

Things I am tired of hearing people say:

It is what it is.
Sounds like a personal problem!
Looks like someone has too much time on their hands.

That last one especially irks, because I believe it actually stems from jealousy – we all prioritize to allow time to do what is important. If someone’s passion is important to them, be it holiday lights or elaborate recipes or meticulous scale models or something as mundane as reading, they will make time for it. Everyone should. I think the “too much time on their hands!” people actually are crappy at time management and resent those of us who know how to prioritize.

I am also tired of reporters starting stories like this:

“X (X = something I, the reporter, will assume I have uncovered and you, the reader, have never heard of) is blah blah blah. Xes do this unusual thing, this shocking thing and that weird thing. Xes want this and that, can be found here and there and are making this purported social change. Welcome to the world of X.

Seriously, it’s everywhere. Always ending in “Welcome to the world of…” and I am over it, hereby declaring a moratorium.

Vintage Jamie:
Today’s is just weird. I think this was just my stupid, awkward way of telling the internet that I am in a relationship, and introducing who is certain to be a frequently-mentioned person when writing about my life. And I can’t believe I ever thought this was funny enough to put online. Thank god I got funnier. It takes a while, though. I’m warning you.

Oh, geez, thank heaven someone else hates “It is what it is” as much as I do. Is this a new thing? Why have I never heard it before? Or why has it never bothered me before?

It’s like the conversational way of saying, “I don’t understand it, I don’t like it but I don’t know how to change it so I give up.” Or something.

My friend Val vomits this phrase every few minutes. Daughter uses the potty at home but not in public? “It is what it is.” She and her husband are contemplating divorce again? “It is what it is.” Men get paid more than women in every workplace? “It is what it is.”

Please, nice lady, make it stop. I don’t want to have to bash any heads in so close after my New Year’s resolutions!

Jamie Says:

IT IS SO LAZY. It’s like the lazy person’s tell.

I have even more for you – a whole list of banished words. And guess what’s on there…?
