UK: Day 5

Back from Wales. It was wonderful. Due to a bunch of boring difficulties, we didn’t arrive as early as planned and instead of taking a mini road trip, raced around Cardiff hitting as many cool sights as we could before it got dark. My original plan for Wales was crazy pub-hopping. Instead, our friend Llinos took us to her favorite haunt, a pub where she has worked for more than 10 years. After 4 days of feeling like a touring stranger in a foreign country, Llinos gave us an evening where we felt like visiting friends and it was just what we needed.

We spent the early part of the next day in Wales, then traveled back to London to meet a friend for dinner. He took us to a really, really nice place where I enjoyed one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten – seared scallops over lemon and sweet peas risotto. Damn, it was good. He also told great stories and made us laugh a lot, and I’m sure the red wine and after dinner pints helped that bit along as well.

New photos were added to the same set, but the new ones start here.

We spent today shopping and walking around Covent Garden, and now I’m back in the flat resting for a few minutes. Matt’s out picking up takeaway – he’s obsessed with this joint up the road promising American-style burgers, and he wants to put them to the test. When he gets back, we’ll meet up with a rugby friend, Chrissy, who happens to be spending this month in London.

Tomorrow is Tourist Day, when another family friend takes us around – we deliberately have not seen any of the typical sights so we’ll be a clean slate. I believe that will be followed by another spectacular dinner. (Thanks, Peckerhead!) And that brings us to Friday, our last day here.

I knew it would go fast, but I still wish it wasn’t going so damn fast. I’m having a great time.
