As Charged
I am a guilty, guilty person. Anytime anyone wants to talk to me about anything – my boss, my friend, my boyfriend – I assume the news is tragic, and that I am to blame. My boss called me in to talk the other day. During the entire walk to her office, I just about died thinking I was about to get canned, and she ended up giving me a raise.
Clearly, my guilt is unfounded, but it’s there. I’d like to eradicate it completely, but barring that, I’d like to keep it from showing so much. I can feel how the guilt is written all over my face, and I’m sure it’s hurting me personally and professionally. After all, how can an employer or loved one be expected to trust me when I constantly look like I just held up a bank?
As I get ready to kick off my new job, two issues relating to my guilty, guilty conscience bubble to the surface. One, I would like to discuss this with my therapist, but we have to take a 3 months break while I wait for my new benefits to kick in. Two, I really don’t want to be slinking around my new workplace looking like I just got a blow job in the Oval Office.
How can I get rid of the guilt? How can I hide it? Am I the only person who has this problem? I’m insane, aren’t I?
